Carnegie Mellon University Ballroom Dance Club

Our club is both a social organization, with beginner lessons and social dance events, and a dance school, teaching novices and veterans a large variety of Ballroom and Latin dances. We welcome all CMU students and members of the Pittsburgh community. People — Our club’s members range from those with two left feet (and sometimes more) to veteran dancers with years of experience. We welcome anyone interested in learning and having fun, including Pittsburgh area undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals. If you don’t have a partner, no worries! We welcome singles and couples. Dances — We base our lessons on the International Latin (Cha-Cha, Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble, Jive) and Standard (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz) dances, but we also teach social dances like Salsa, Hustle, and Swing. We start by teaching the basics, so if you have ever wanted to learn to dance… we are the place to start! Classes — We offer two types of classes: Beginner and Professional. Beginner lessons are taught every week, on Mondays and Wednesdays, and are a great place to start learning basic steps, timing, and moves for a whole assortment of dances! Click here to learn more! Our professional lessons are divided into 5 levels: Newcomer, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Intermediate 3, and Gold. Competition Team — The competition team is a great chance to push yourself to the next level, and to dance with a group of talented and highly motivated people. Expert dancers and novices welcome – competitions have levels ranging from Newcomer to Champ, and you register for the dances you want to perform. Carnegie Mellon University Center for the Arts in Society

CAS is a faculty research center dedicated to the exploration of the arts as they relate to and involve the larger society. A collaborative effort of artists and scholars affiliated with CMU’s College of Fine Arts and Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, CAS explores and aims to have impact on the workings of social power and in processes of social change. The Center for the Arts in Society (CAS) was founded in spring 2000 with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and additional support from Carnegie Mellon University, the College of Fine Arts and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. In ensuing years further support was provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Eden Hall Foundation, The Pennsylvania Humanities Council, MCAI, the Sprout Fund, and the Faulk Foundation. From 2000 through 2007 CAS supported annual postdoctoral and senior residential fellowships, provided a series of undergraduate courses, and established an undergraduate minor in Arts in Society. It sponsored several community programs, including Arts Greenhouse and Take Back the Hill, as well as a small grant program for artists and faculty. It hosted a series of events, including talks and panels, performances, and a conference on the topic of “Impermanence.” Center members and invitees to that conference collaborated in the production of book on that topic: (Im)permanence: Cultures in/out of Time (Pennsylvania State University Press, 2008). In 2008 the focus and organization of CAS changed as it shifted away from supporting residential fellowships and toward supporting multi-year collaborative artistic and scholarly projects undertaken by Carnegie Mellon faculty members. This shift is facilitated under the rubric of three-year “Initiatives” on themes of interest to significant numbers of faculty from the College of Fine Arts and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Each Initiative is led by two co-organizers who, with the director, select three multi-year projects for support. A cross-college executive committee is also seated to advise the projects during the three-year initiative. Each Project has a leader or leaders, and involves different constituencies of people drawn from within and outside Carnegie Mellon University. The initiative organizers, executive committee members, and project leaders take an active role in supervising the projects, as well as other Center-sponsored talks, workshops, and public events relating to the topic of the Initiative. The named initiatives thus far have been: “Public Art” (2008-2011), “Media” (2011-14), “Performance” (2014 – 17), and Narrative (2017 -2020). CAS seeks to actively participate in furthering the intellectual pursuits of the faculty in the humanities and the Arts by creating small focused events with visitors to campus. We have held workshops lead by most of the Center’s invited speakers. The workshops develop connections among faculty and with representatives of organizations in Pittsburgh through a planned series of discussions and debates framed by a subject and materials provided by the guest lecturer. CAS has sponsored a wide range of talks, panels, events, exhibits and performances. Project directors have developed new undergraduate course offerings. These courses thematically relate to the subject of the project director’s investigation. CAS has also continued its support of the development of community programs with Lucky After Dark and continues to work with community partners.

ETC’s mission is to provide students with the opportunity to become entrepreneurs that combine technology and fine arts to create new processes, tools and visions for storytelling and arts entertainment. How you can help A Carnegie Museum of Natural History scientist travels to the Caribbean island of Hispañola, and there discovers a new species of never-before-seen moth. The scientist brings that moth back to Pittsburgh, studies it, and puts it on display. In the museum, a child is wowed by this huge specimen with colorful wings and learns how scientists can use this moth to determine conservation strategies for the Hispañola’s endangered ecosystems. And decades later, that child—now a scientist herself, inspired by her visits to the museum—uses that specimen preserved in the museum’s collection to make new discoveries about the natural world in which we live. And it all happened because of your support for Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Carnegie Science Center

Now open, Carnegie Science Center offers four floors of interactive exhibits that are geared for all ages—from the smallest scientists to adults. Carnegie Science Center inspires and entertains by connecting science and technology with everyday life. A general admission ticket includes four floors of interactive exhibits, demonstration theater shows, Buhl Planetarium, Miniature Railroad & Village, Highmark SportsWorks, and USS Requin (SS481) submarine. Extra fees apply for laser shows, movies in The Rangos Giant Cinema, and touring exhibitions in the Scaife Exhibit Gallery. In addition to providing valuable scientific experiences, Carnegie Science Center engages in outreach programs that serve Pittsburgh’s diverse community. Center for African American Poetry and Poetics

Founded in 2016, the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics is a creative think tank for African American and African diasporic poetries and poetics. Our mission is to highlight, promote, and share the work of African American and African diasporic poets and to pollinate cross-disciplinary conversation and collaboration. Our programming aims to present exciting live poetry and conversation, contextualize the meaning of that work, and archive it for future generations. We are a space for innovative collaboration between writers, scholars, and other artists thinking through poetics as a unique and contemporary movement. In its effort to highlight, promote, archive, research, and generally advance the practices and epistemologies of African American and African diasporic poetry and poetics, CAAPP supports individual writers, artists, scholars, and others nationally and at a range of career stages and academic ranks. We also prioritize providing opportunities for poets and artists outside of academia, in the Pittsburgh community and beyond. Origins The Center emerged in a brainstorming session between Pitt poetry professors Terrance Hayes, Dawn Lundy Martin, and Yona Harvey. This meeting was initiated by English Department Chair and Professor Don Bialostosky, who wanted to discuss how the department might best celebrate the presence of three acclaimed African American poets on its faculty. In short, the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics was brought into being through true collaboration, an approach now at the heart of CAAPP’s philosophy and work. What is our poetics? We are concerned with a practice-based poetics, where creating is centralized as a way of working through questions to arrive at new ideas. Collaboration, then, the process of creating in partnership, in community, is an expression of the practice of poetics at its most dynamic. It is also an opportunity for greater inclusion and cross pollination. The spirit of cultural collaboration and conversation is at the core of our philosophy, programming, and aspirations. Why now? The work of the Center is vital at this particular time, when so many black poets are at the forefront of contemporary American poetry. African American and African diasporic poets are pushing the envelope of poetics and expressions of blackness through art. Though some attention has been paid to the fact of black poetry, there has been little discussion of what the diverse black poetries of this particular moment mean and do. In a climate of renewed attention on racial disparities and systematic violence against African Americans, the Center is focused on a poetics of engagement, in relation to this historic moment and with an eye toward moments to come.

Safeguarding + Sustaining Artists’ Careers Our Mission CERF+ serves artists who work in craft disciplines by providing a safety net to support strong and sustainable careers. CERF+’s core services are education programs, advocacy, network building and emergency relief. Art is America’s common wealth and artists are its most precious asset. In 1985, the Craft Emergency Relief Fund (now a program of CERF+) began when co-founders Carol Sedestrom Ross, then president of American Craft Enterprises, and glassblower Josh Simpson recognized the inherent generosity within the craft community. Artists would “pass the hat” to collect monetary donations during shows and exhibitions in support of fellow artists dealing with emergencies. CERF+ was founded to expand this grassroots effort and has since provided almost $2 million in financial assistance and more than $400,000 in donated services to professional artists in craft disciplines nationwide.

Chamber Music Pittsburgh’s mission is to present world-class chamber music ensembles and soloists, promising emerging artists, and innovative programs; and to foster an appreciation for chamber music in the Pittsburgh community by offering educational programs and experiences.

Chatham Baroque

Performance : Music

“One of the country’s most distinguished period ensembles” (Palisadian Post), and “One of Pittsburgh’s greatest treasures” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), Chatham Baroque continues to excite local, national, and international audiences with dazzling technique and lively interpretations of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music played on instruments of the period. Founded in 1990, Chatham Baroque continues to thrive with a full calendar of concerts, tours, musical collaborations, and the CD releases. The trio of baroque violin, viola da gamba, theorbo and baroque guitar tours nationally and internationally, and has recorded ten critically acclaimed CDs. The ensemble offers audiences the opportunity to hear baroque music that is accessible and thrillingly vivid, with a freshness akin to improvisational jazz. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette proclaims, “Pound for pound, you aren’t going to find a better ensemble… than Chatham Baroque,” and “in terms of quality of artistry, Chatham Baroque is comfortably on par with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Pittsburgh Opera.” Chatham Baroque is repeatedly listed among the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s “Top 50 Cultural Forces in Pittsburgh” and “Ten Best Classical Concerts.” The trio’s Pittsburgh concert series in recent seasons has been substantially broadened by exciting collaborations with Quantum Theatre, Pittsburgh Symphony, Pittsburgh Opera, Renaissance & Baroque, Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh, and Attack Theatre. The ensemble prides itself on its commitment to the Pittsburgh region and its ability to serve nationally and abroad as ambassadors for the city. In addition to local and touring concerts and recording, Chatham Baroque presents Peanut Butter & Jam Sessions for pre-schoolers and other various community and early childhood events. Chatham Baroque is Ensemble-in-Residence at WQED-FM and Calvary Episcopal Church. Chatham Baroque has toured across the United States as well as in South America and Mexico, the Virgin Islands, and Canada. On the road, the ensemble consistently receives high praise. The Washington Post calls them “musically impeccable”; the Chicago Tribune, “a splendid period-instruments ensemble”; and the New York Times praises their “colorful virtuosity.”

City of Asylum @ Alphabet City

City of Asylum @ Alphabet City is a hub for Pittsburgh’s readers and writers, jazz and small-scale music and performance, and artistic experimentation. It is a home for diverse voices from around the globe—a place where Pittsburgh meets the world and the world meets Pittsburgh. And it is also a home for many partnering artists and organizations in our own community. By establishing a safe haven for writers and artists who voice ideas that are new, different, or provocative in a diverse urban community, we encourage new lines of communication, cultural exchange, and collaboration. Sharing one another’s narratives can transform the lives of both residents and artists and combat intolerance and exclusion.

City of Play

More Curious, Less Afraid Founded as Obscure Games in 2008 by Adam Nelson, City of Play was originally a student group at the University of Pittsburgh where players would regularly gather to learn and play unusual games from around the world. Since its conception, City of Play has created and curated dozens of games for businesses, communities, and players throughout the greater Pittsburgh region. In 2017, Greg Manley succeeded Nelson as City of Play’s director and the company oriented its mission around the international practices of Carnival. In addition to its original game-design services, and obscure sports gatherings, City of Play now produces immersive experiences and workshops in an effort to build the spirit of public revelry.

Over 12,000 artists, art historians, scholars, curators, critics, collectors, educators, publishers, and other professionals in the visual arts belong as individual members. CAA ANNUAL CONFERENCE The CAA Annual Conference is the largest international gathering of professionals in the visual arts. INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS A collection of programs tailored towards CAA’s international members. ADVOCACY CAA advocates on behalf of all professionals in the visual arts. In this capacity, the organization releases statements, issues guidelines, and publishes news to advance the cause and impact of the visual arts. FAIR USE This Code of Best Practices provides visual-arts professionals with a set of principles addressing best practices in the fair use of copyrighted materials. RAAMP RAAMP serves to promote scholarship, advocacy, and discussion related to the role of academic art museums and their contribution to the educational mission of their parent institutions. To this end, it functions as a publicly accessible online repository; it collects, stores, and shares resources. AWARDS FOR DISTINCTION With these annual awards, CAA seeks to honor individual artists, art historians, authors, curators, and critics whose accomplishments transcend their individual disciplines and contribute to the profession as a whole and to the world at large. PUBLISHING GRANTS CAA awards several publishing grants to support the publication of scholarly manuscripts. There are currently three such grants being offered, which are the Millard Meiss Publication Fund, the Wyeth Foundation for American Art Publication Grant, and the Terra Foundation for American Art Publication Grant TRAVEL GRANTS CAA offers Travel Grants to graduate students, faculty, and classrooms studying art history and to artists and scholars in the United States and internationally. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIPS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS CAA’s Professional Development Fellowship Program supports promising artists, designers, craftspersons, historians, curators, and critics who are enrolled in MFA, PhD, and other terminal-degree programs nationwide. PODCASTS CAA provides a series of podcasts devoted to professional-development topics for artists. These podcasts intended for use by artists, art historians, curators, nonprofit art professionals, and other constituencies.

Established in 1972, Concept Art Gallery is proud to represent and exhibit many of the regions most established artists, along with artists of national and international reputation. Our inventory contains Contemporary Graphics by well-known American and European Artists, including Jennifer Bartlett, Patrick Caulfield, Nicole Eisenman, Fred Eversley, Jeffrey Gibson, Sam Gilliam, Jenny Holzer, Wolf Kahn, Deborah Kass, Glenn Ligon, Fred Tomaselli, Faith Ringold and many others. Concept Gallery also focuses on Contemporary Realist painting and historic and industrial images of Pittsburgh, including the work of George Hetzel, Roy Hilton, Aaron Gorson, Samuel Rosenberg, and Henry Koerner. The vintage work of Western PA photographers Luke Swank, Selden Davis, Clyde Hare, and Ross Altwater is an important regional specialty for the gallery. Additionally, Concept conducts regular live auctions in our Regent Square gallery space. Bidders can participate in house, via telephone, absentee bid or in real-time online through Live Auctioneers and Invaluable. Since 1986, we have auctioned Modern and Contemporary Art & Design, Estate Antiques and Fine Art, and Single Owner sales including: Alcoa, The Estate of Jerry Caplan, The Emily F. Oliver Estate, the Estate of Jane Epstine, and The Joseph Trees Estate. Gallery directors Sam Berkovitz and Alison Brand Oehler are licensed auctioneers and certified members of the Appraisers Association of America. Together they have appraised many single artworks and collections for individuals, corporations and estates and act as consultants to numerous area collectors, foundations and museums, including: The Carnegie Museum of Art, The Warhol Museum, The Westmoreland Museum of Art and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. Concept Art Gallery offers in-house insured archival framing services. Our framing staff collectively share 50 years of experience handling and framing fine art, and routinely frame works for area collectors and museums. The Gallery also has professional art handlers on staff to transport and install customer artwork and framing. Concept Art Gallery is located in the Regent Square neighborhood of Pittsburgh and is easily accessed from major highways. Confluence is Pittsburgh’s longest-running (1988) literary conference with a focus on speculative fiction. The conference offers a wide variety of activities including writing workshops, live music concerts, science programming, author readings, a dealers room, art show & demos, poetry readings, Saturday evening entertainment and panel discussions with award-winning authors, publishers, artist and editors on many different subjects. Confluence gives the attendees a unique opportunity to meet and chat with the writers and artists who create the SF/F/H culture today, and are shaping the future of speculative fiction. our mission: to engage the public in creative experiences through contemporary craft Presenting contemporary art in craft media by international, national and regional artists since 1971, Contemporary Craft offers cutting edge exhibitions focused on multicultural diversity and non-mainstream art, as well as a range of classes, community outreach programs, and a retail store. Through its mission of engaging the public in creative experiences through contemporary craft, the organization offers meaningful art opportunities for more than 145,000 people a year through four core values: providing vital support for artists; filling critical gaps in public education; sharing cross-cultural perspectives; and using art to build community. We strive to engage visitors in the creative process through contemporary craft and design. Interpretive programs, lectures, performances and weekend activities are offered in conjunction with each exhibition. Contemporary Craft charges no admission and is open Monday through Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm. Experience the changing exhibitions at our Satellite Gallery, located in the Steel Plaza T-Station Lobby at BNY Mellon Center, one of the most accessible public spaces in the city of Pittsburgh. The Satellite Gallery is open daily through midnight. Because families are a highly valued audience, Contemporary Craft offers the Drop-In Studio. This free, hands-on activity space for children and adults remains open during all public hours. The Drop-In Studio encourages visitors to participate in a hands-on art activity that have been developed by artists to tie-in to our special exhibitions.
