aCCeSsions is the graduate student-led online journal of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. The second year graduate students comprise the editorial board of aCCeSsions. Together, they employ a collaborative approach to commissioning, editing, and curating new transdisciplinary writing and artworks for online space. These new visual, text-based, and aural contributions revolve around a new theme each issue. aCCeSsions represents a culmination of each graduating class’ collaborative interests and concerns. The platform is a space in which graduate students may test the limits of curatorial practice over the course of an annual publication cycle. Past issues of aCCeSsions are available in the “Archive” section of the website. The website and each issue of the journal has been designed by Other Means in close collaboration with each graduating class at CCS.

American Composers Alliance

American Composers Alliance (ACA) strives to encourage performances of American concert music by keeping the music in print and easily available for the long term future. In accordance with the original goals of the organization in the 1930s, ACA believes that composers should receive credit and payment when their music is used. We make the process easier for performing artists who need to obtain this music, and we encourage professional courtesy and respect for the creators of this music. ACA works with composers, estates, libraries, performers, ensembles, recording projects, and distributors of classical music from around the world. ACA provides a professional structure for composers to reach new audiences and patrons, and to earn income from their music thorough commissions on sales and other income streams managed and collected by ACA on behalf of their music. Affiliated publishing imprints are American Composers Edition (BMI), Composers Facsimile Edition (BMI) and American Concert Editions (ASCAP). The catalog contains over 14,000 titles and represents a broad view of musical expression in the U.S. from 1900 to the present day. Support services by ACA are provided for composers at a professional level writing chamber music, choral music, new music, arrangements, opera, dramatic, theatrical, electronic, film, and orchestral music. ACA is a publishing administrator and distribution agent for scores and performance sets in both print and digital format. ACA sells, rents, donates, and licenses music, including rights for recordings, website audio and video streaming, documentary films; dance and dramatic uses, chamber and orchestra performances; school classroom uses; audio and video recordings; textbook and article reprints, arrangements, and new editions of music from the past. ACA is funded by the generous contributions of Broadcast Music Inc. American Federation of Musicians

80,000 musicians comprise the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM). We perform in orchestras, backup bands, festivals, clubs and theaters—both on Broadway and on tour. AFM members also make music for films, TV, commercials and sound recordings. As the largest union of musicians in the world, we have the power to make the music industry work for musicians. Our history began in 1896 when musicians gathered in Indianapolis and organized the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) for “any musician who receives pay for his musical services.” Representing 3,000 members, AFM was granted a charter by the American Federation of Labor (AFL). Wherever there was music, there were musicians organizing in the early 20th century—in theaters, restaurants, night clubs, hotel ballrooms, amusement parks, carnivals, symphonies, operas, ballets and increasingly at theaters as accompaniment for silent films. In 1927 the first “talkie” film was released and within two years, 20,000 musicians lost their jobs performing in theater pits for silent films. This was not the first—or the last time—that technological advances would transform musicians’ work. Yet musicians remained strong and established minimum wage scales for vitaphone, movietone & phonograph record work. In 1938, film companies signed their first contract with AFM. Musicians continued organizing in orchestras, radio and in the making of film scores. But musicians were losing income as phonorecords replaced radio orchestras and jukeboxes competed with live music in nightclubs. In 1942, AFM members embarked on one of their biggest campaigns—a recording ban. Musicians went on strike in 1942 shutting down the U.S. recording market for two years until they won. By standing together, they forced the recording industry to establish a royalty on recording sales to employ musicians at live performances. That’s how the Music Performance Trust Fund (MPTF) was established and it continues to sponsor free live performances throughout the United States and Canada. Numerous labor actions in the following decades improved industry standards and working conditions for musicians. New agreements covered TV programs, cable TV, independent films and video games. Pension funds were established. Musicians also secured groundbreaking contracts providing royalties for digital transmissions and from recordings of live performances. “The only object of AFM is to bring order out of chaos and to harmonize and bring together all the professional musicians of the country into one progressive body,” said AFM’s first President Owen Miller in 1896. 120 years later, AFM musicians continue standing together to have power. Now we are 80,000 musicians strong playing in orchestras, backup bands, festivals, clubs and theaters—both on Broadway and on tour. We also make music for film, TV, commercials and sound recordings.

American Film Institute

AFI champions progress in visual storytelling to empower storytellers, inspire story lovers and further the limitless power of the moving image. Established in 1967, the American Film Institute is the nation’s nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and inspiring artists and audiences through initiatives that champion the past, present and future of the moving image. The AFI Conservatory — the Institute’s world-renowned filmmaker training program — opened its doors in 1969 to an inaugural class that included Terrence Malick, Caleb Deschanel and Paul Schrader. Today, the Conservatory offers a two-year MFA degree in six filmmaking disciplines: Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design and Screenwriting. In a collaborative production environment, AFI Fellows learn to master the art of storytelling, collectively creating up to 175 films a year. Fellows actively participate in the entire life cycle of a film, from development through production and exhibition. Alumni of this elite program, ranging from modern masters to bold new voices defining the state of the art form, include Andrea Arnold, Darren Aronofsky, Ari Aster, Sam Esmail, Brad Falchuk, Liz Hannah, Patty Jenkins, Janusz Kamiński, Matthew Libatique, David Lynch, Melina Matsoukas, Polly Morgan, Rachel Morrison and Wally Pfister, among others. AFI’s other pioneering programs include year-round exhibition at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center and at AFI FEST and AFI DOCS across the nation; workshops aimed at increasing diversity in the storytelling community, including the AFI Directing Workshop for Women and the Cinematography Intensive for Women; honoring today’s masters through the AFI Life Achievement Award and AFI AWARDS; and scholarly efforts such as the AFI Catalog of Feature Films and the AFI Archive preservation project that uphold film history for future generations. Arcade Comedy Theater

We’re Pittsburgh’s only non-profit theater dedicated to comedy. Our mission: Arcade Comedy Theater provides an interactive platform for players of all levels, both onstage and off, to experience various forms of theatrical comedy, from proven standards to offbeat styles. Our vision: We strive to elevate and advance the art of comedy in Pittsburgh. Arcade Comedy Theater is downtown Pittsburgh’s destination for all things comedy. Opened in February 2013, the Arcade began as a storefront converted into an intimate 75-seat theater. With a charming brick wall backdrop (and a loud, echo-y tile floor) the theater first space was home to some of the funniest, most innovative, and most affordable comedy in the city. For over four and a half years, the Arcade produced or presented over 1,000 shows and welcomed over 50,000 visitors to the Cultural District. In November 2016, the Arcade announced that it would be moving (just down the street) to a newly renovated facility at 943 Liberty Avenue. The Arcade’s new home, which is opening in November 2017, occupies one of the last vacant buildings in the Cultural District’s 900 block. It’s a major upgrade for the comedy community: the Arcade’s new home features two stages, a lounge, dedicated classroom space, and plenty of room to grow. Even as the Arcade expands into a brand new building, its goal is the same: to present fun, accessible, and affordable live comedy to the Pittsburgh community… every weekend.

Artists Image Resources (AIR) is an artist run, non-profit print and imaging organization established in 1996 to serve as a laboratory for artists, educators and the community. AIR’s mission is to integrate the creation of fine art prints with educational programs that explore the role of the artist in contemporary culture. AIR’s primary activities are to initiate and facilitate projects with professional artists and to create active laboratory environments where artists, students and the public interact. AIR’s fundamental interest is in how print and imaging processes are being used in broader contemporary art making practice and how these practices impact and reflect culture. The organization combines a print lab (that publishes print editions with artists and provides fee for service project support to educators and the public) with a cooperative workshop where individuals can learn all facets of printmaking through individual study, and school-centered collaborative programs. Individuals may also become members of a volunteer workforce that trades technical and organizational skills for facilities access and project assistance from the studio. Our goal has been to create a dynamic learning environment that supports the artist and informs and challenges our schools and our communities. We do this by initiating new work with artists and providing educational programs, discussions, and exhibitions that encourage strong voices and support informed and active community members. Print shops have long been associated with voice in our communities and printmaking has a long history of apprenticeship learning. We find that our dynamic mix of mentorship and apprenticeship learning models, driven by thoughtful and ambitious artist’s projects, can be extremely effective in stimulating and reinforcing critical thinking and problem solving skills in students and in the community. HISTORY Artists Image Resources (AIR) was established in 1996, was incorporated as a nonprofit Pennsylvania Corporation in 1997 and received nonprofit 501(c) 3 tax status in 1998. In 1996, AIR started working with professional artists on projects and began to organize resources in a 10,000 square foot space in an urban neighborhood on the North Side of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. In 1996 and 1997, AIR began working with university educators to design programs that would allow the aspiring artist to work directly, hand in hand, with the professional artist in an active real world studio environment. This methodology continues to define the studio as the active and engaged art production and learning laboratory that it is today. As AIR continued to support working artists and students in the creation of new work and the development of best artistic practices, we also began to organize exhibitions of the work created. AIR began to archive prints and developmental material (sketches, preliminary proofs, etc.) to create a print inventory and educational archive. The fundamental structure of the organization consists of these three elements: production, education and archive/exhibition. As we have integrated all of these activities into a dynamic whole, we have expanded the nature of how we initiate artists’ projects, how we allow general access to the shop and how we allow our apprenticeship program to expand. We have also developed a more formal collaborative educational program structure that engages high school students and youth into the shop dynamic. We have further expanded the exhibition opportunities that we provide through the studio, allowing more and more diverse work to be presented and discussed.

What can you expect? Business and marketing for creative folks who HATE business and marketing. Useful “How to” type stuff about things that will help you market your work online {with NO techy jargon!} and offline too. Entrepreneurship for creative people. Stories about stuff we have learned at the business school of hard knocks. Who are we? I worked as a designer and illustrator, both freelance and for a variety of design and advertising companies before getting made redundant in the dotcom crash in 2001. It was pretty obvious that basically I wasn’t much good at working for other people and decided to set up on my own. Since then I have never looked back and combine working as an artist printmaker and illustrator with running a web design and online marketing business. I would never go back to having a “proper job” for all the tea in China. I work in a mini office/studio converted from an old toilet block [much nicer than it sounds] next to my house on the edge of the moors in West Yorkshire, England. However, I mostly write for this site in the early morning, sitting in bed with my laptop surrounded by cats, industrial strength coffee and biscuit crumbs. I can also be found on my personal artists website and here at Sputnik, my Web Design and Online Marketing company. Martin Stellar Ex-monk, once-upon-a-tailor, semi-retired copywriter. Email marketing specialist, lover of art and teacher of ethical sales and marketing strategies to artists and artisans. That’s the nutshell version. The longer story is that while in the monastery I became a fancy-pants bespoke tailor. Once I left there, the logical choice was to start a tailoring company. It was fun, but difficult: As with so many artists and artisans, I was dead against marketing. I thought that the quality of my work would sell itself, that word-of-mouth would be enough. Well, it wasn’t enough. Obviously. And then my father passed away, leaving me some 130.000 Euro. I thought I had it made – money begets money, right? I thought I was unbreakable. But, I still didn’t do any marketing, so that inheritance didn’t last very long and my company bit the dust. That’s when I decided to finally grow up, and learn how to promote and market and sell, and that led to me becoming a copywriter – a hired hand, writing texts, a keyboard-slinger. It taught me a lot – so much so, that in the end I decided to stop that line of work and focus on teaching artists how to be more professional and sell more of their work. Because there are people out there waiting to find you, who would love to know you and buy your art. My mission is to help you get in front of those people.

A website for teaching and learning in the arts. Since the Kennedy Center’s opening in 1971, schoolchildren, parents and educators have turned to us as the nation’s premiere cultural resource. Embracing this responsibility, the Kennedy Center instituted ARTSEDGE in 1996 as its educational media arm, reaching out to schools, communities, individuals and families with printed materials, classroom support and Internet technologies. The full impact of ARTSEDGE might be measured by considering that of the eleven million people who participate in Kennedy Center Education Department programming each year, four million do it through ARTSEDGE resources. The site is visited each day by more than can be held if every theater in the Kennedy Center complex was filled to capacity. In an education landscape that is evolving with new ideas of how, when and where we teach, learn and create, the ARTSEDGE team has revisited every part of what— and how—we offer resources. We are expanding our content to serve a new definition of educators, encompassing classroom and out-of-school teachers, with the single-minded goal to support arts-based student learning, whether in the classroom or an informal learning environment, like the home.
