Do you ever feel like creating your art is the ‘easy’ part?
The process of creating art and talking about your artwork are completely different fields. Often, an artist’s biggest pitfall is a weak statement and they fail to captivate their audience. Learning to communicate confidently about your work can support your open-call applications, leading to more success with art prizes, residencies and exhibition opportunities.
This online workshop is open to artists of all levels and will give you the tools to write about your work and create a confident artist statement. We will be joined by artist, writer, and artist-statement-extraordinaire, Rosalind Davis, founder and director of ArtCan, Kate Enters, as well as award winning Lancashire based artist, Kirsten Todd, to discuss key advice on crafting your statement and creating killer applications. Including:
• Why artists’ statements are important.
• Key elements of art prize applications.
• A breakdown of an effective artist statement.
• How to speak about yourself and your art.
• Actionable points for artists to implement immediately
The session will be led by Rosalind Davis, Artist, Writer, Curator, Royal College of Art (RCA) graduate, and author of ‘What They Didn’t Teach You in Art School.’
Kate Enters works at the prize-winning London architecture practice, Stanton Williams, is an experienced curator, a figurative artist and regularly writes about art. Over the last decade she has developed this community of artists and art supporters across 26 countries, built international corporate partnerships and during the pandemic worked with a designer to create a bespoke virtual art gallery. ArtCan has been awarded Most Empowering Artist Opportunity Provider – UK for the past two years and is a member of Social Enterprise UK and the Global Climate Coalition.
We will also be joined by Kirsten Todd, an intuitive medium and artist based in Lancashire. Todd is the Winner of the British Art Prize Edding Acrylic Award 2022, and has shown her work in the Mall Galleries, London, around the UK and internationally, with solo shows in the UK.
Free to premium members of the VAA, or £19.99 for standard & non-members. A recording of the event will be available. Spaces are limited. Get your tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/how-to-write-about-your-art-artist-statements-open-call-applications-tickets-538828499547
