Call for Artists!
Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania’s Education Department is excited to launch our search for a local artist to create engaging, diverse images to use in sexual and reproductive health lessons.

Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania’s Education Department has struggled for years to find images to support our teaching of puberty, anatomy, the menstrual cycle and more. The images we have used overwhelmingly depict white skin and one specific body type. They do not come close to representing the full diversity of our world or the people we teach.

A part of our department’s vision is to celebrate and normalize all bodies, not just in our words, but also in our materials. These materials need to support the Planned Parenthood mission to serve all people, equitably and inclusively. And they need to be engaging for young people. Sex education is necessary, but it is also interesting and fun! Our visuals should immediately communicate that to our students.

We are excited to collaborate with a local artist to design approximately 15 highly engaging, inclusive, diverse images. These images will depict internal and external human sexual and reproductive anatomy, including illustrations of penises, vulvas, the menstrual cycle, and various stages of human development. A comprehensive list of images, and a breakdown of what should be included and labeled in each will be provided to the selected artist. Support from PPWP educators will also be provided to ensure all images are medically accurate, inclusive, and able to be translated into various printed materials.

The selected artist will receive a commission of $10,000 to create approximately 15 original images. The rights of the commissioned series will be held by Planned Parenthood of Western PA for printing, education and sharing with educators across Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

If you are an artist/designer living in Western Pennsylvania, are able to work under a deadline, and are interested in being commissioned to create 15 of these images, please complete this application!

Deadline to submit: Digital files of the submissions must be submitted by 11:59 P.M. Eastern Wednesday, March 31, 2021.
