Pittsburgh Public Theater and Empty Space Project seek emerging and mid-career performance artists within the Greater Pittsburgh area to use one of Shakespeare’s sonnets as inspiration to create something new in the artist’s personal style. The final performance pieces will be filmed throughout the O’Reilly Theater in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, and will premiere at the Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Finalist Showcase in February 2021.
The collection of 154 Shakespeare sonnets remains some of the most important poems written in the English language. As sonnets, their main focus is ‘love’, but they also reflect upon time, change, aging, lust, absence, infidelity, and the problematic gap between ideal and reality when it comes to the person you love.
For interested artists, we want you to find inspiration in Shakespeare’s language and universal themes to create art that speaks to you and your followers. We seek artists who are curious explorers, excited to create something new from something old. The adaptation should be in the form of a song or spoken word, and should be 2-5 minutes.
Selected artists will receive:
Empty Space Project’s mission is to use digital media to showcase artists creating with minimal resources and repurposing buildings under development. They are a media platform that films the creative process of artists in empty properties to raise awareness on community development.
Pittsburgh Public Theater’s mission is to provide artistically diverse theatrical experiences of the highest quality. At the moment, they have theater spaces left unused and a need to share art on a digital platform to reach their audiences at home.
This partnership will examine empty properties within the Cultural District, inviting artists to share their work in spaces currently unused. Pittsburgh Public Theater and Empty Space Project are giving artists the opportunity to reimagine Shakespeare and collaborate on ways to share old stories in a new way.
