The Distillery program represents one of the BHA’s most effective and impactful programs over its 25 year history. It is one of Pittsburgh’s top professional development experiences for creatives seeking to take their career to the next level.Through the Distillery Emerging Artist Residency Program, Brew House Association brings together a diverse array of professional development opportunities for emerging artists, craftspeople, and makers. Distillery offers a multidimensional growth process, not just space.
“Space to work is so important. Building creative community is invaluable as an artist. I was so honored to be part of the program. I created work I never imagined because of this program. It changed and added value to my process and work.” – Tereneh Idia, Distillery 8, 2018
DISTILLERY PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Distillery is a year-long studio residency designed to help 7 emerging artists transition into a professional artistic career by supporting a rigorous studio practice and providing professional development opportunities in a creative and affordable environment. This program focuses on inspiring participants to embrace new challenges in their work and connect to a supportive community. Artists work throughout the year towards a group exhibition at the Brew House Gallery.
Selected artists will gain access to local mentors and to monthly professional development workshops led by a variety of experts in the field. Guest speakers will guide group critiques and give advice on essential skills for artists such as developing effective work samples, writing grant proposals, collaborating with community, marketing as an artist, and more.
Through Distillery artists gain access to:
A community with other emerging artists
Subsidized studio space
Professional development workshops
Mentorship from professional artists
Professional documentation of exhibited artworks
Artists are required to:
Attend monthly workshops and group critiques that occur on weekday evenings or weekends.
Complete all tasks assigned at monthly workshops.
Pay all monthly program fees (typical cost $100/ month)

Artists working in any visual media are eligible to apply. Applicants must be based within the Pittsburgh region – housing is not provided. Artists must have access to reliable transportation to the studios. Individual applications will be reviewed on quality of artwork, strength of C.V., and potential impact of the program on applicant’s studio practice and artistic career. We ask our selection committee to think comprehensively about the cohort of artists selected to make sure each group reflects a multitude of voices, processes, and media.
Underrepresented candidates, including black and non-black people of color, people with disabilities, and people who identify as LGBTQ+, are encouraged to apply. Brew House Association is committed to being accessible to all. FEES & STIPENDS
Artists are required to sign a rental agreement for their 250 sq. ft. studio. A refundable $100 security deposit is due at move-in. Program requires a $100 per month participation fee which covers the subsidized cost of studio rent.
Upon completion of the program and all requirements, artists will be eligible to receive a $300 honorarium to assist in transition expenses.
A limited number of partial scholarships may be made available to help support studio fees for eligible artists. Scholarships will be awarded based on demonstration of financial need and short answer in the application.
ABOUT THE STUDIOS
Distillery studios are located in the Brew House, a shared live & work community in the South Side of Pittsburgh. Studios are provided as work space and should function as such – studios are not residential.
Studios are located on the second floor of the building and are accessible by elevator or stairs. Each studio is approximately 250 sq. ft. and are part of a collaborative space with shared access to wifi, sinks, couches, refrigerator, and microwave.
Artists are responsible to provide all furniture and tools for individual studios. 5 out of the 7 studios are finished with dry wall on all sides while the two end studios have 1 exposed brick wall. Individual studios measure approximately 12 ft x 19ft, with 8ft high walls. Note that studio walls do not reach the ceiling so noise and dust particles may travel throughout the space. All studios have an individual window, overhead fluorescent lighting, and ethernet cable. Each studio has sliding barn doors and may be locked using a combination lock.
